Beth has been making theatre for the past 30 years, with Mark Jackson for 27, and at Shotgun for 16. In that time, she’s created three projects based on Three Sisters. By day, she leads choirs for older adults and children at the San Francisco Community Music Center. She likes cookies and cake. bethwilmurt.com

Mark is a director, playwright, performer, and maker. His work in theatre, dance, and performance has been seen throughout the Bay Area, nationally, in the UK, Germany, and Japan. He’s grateful to have been working with Shotgun since 2003, when the company first rolled the dice on one of his ridiculous ideas, and he hopes to still be throwing the creative dice here in 100 years. markjackson-theatermaker.com

Beth & Mark’s Life and Work Together

We began our collaboration as fellow students and actors in a college musical. We coupled up in 1992 and continued to work together as actor (Beth) and director/playwright (Mark) with our company, Art Street Theatre, from 1995 to 2004. Since then we’ve done projects for other companies like Shotgun, Aurora, and Z Space. Now Beth also directs and creates work herself, like her 2017 cabaret, OLGA: A FAREWELL CONCERT, commissioned by Aurora Theatre Company. We can’t seem to get away from Chekhov’s THREE SISTERS. The idea for KILL THE DEBBIE DOWNERS! came from a desire to explore Chekhov’s canvas-like characters in relation to the current, in-process, systemic social revolutions going on in America and the world.

Anton Chekhov, Playwright of Three Sisters

Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov was born in 1860 in the small town of Taganrog, 600 miles south of Moscow. While in school, he began to show flair for writing—and for acting. Yet, in 1879, he moved to Moscow and enrolled in medical school. Chekhov filled his 44 years with numerous careers. While in medical school, he earned money from writing short stories. Although he is most familiar to us for his 14 plays, he also wrote over 200 short stories in his lifetime.
