What’s your creative origin story?

Though I love to create sound and film, I had always felt it would be too difficult to make a career of it. I had resigned myself to assuming my journey would end somewhere in social science. However, in my last term at college, I had the opportunity to support a team of sound designers in the production of a quirky feminist play called The Clitorish, by Mara Nelson-Greenberg. The production we made helped challenge the status quo in regards to how we deal with sexism, power, dominance, and pleasure. It was then that I realized that sound could contribute to these profound (and sometimes political!) messages, and affect how we engage with each other, our communities, and ourselves. I fell in love with theatre then and have been infatuated ever since.

What made you want to be a M.A.D. fellow?

What attracted me to Shotgun were the productions and the people behind them. In the shows I’d seen, I could tell the tight teams of company members, staff, designers, and actors were so deliberate and intentional with their work, working to amplify voices and stories historically silenced in theatre-making. The Shotgun Players’ clear intention plus their scrappy and collaborative show execution are ultimately oriented toward asking real questions to shake us all up a little bit. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?

What is one thing people wouldn’t know just by looking at you?

I play bass in a post-punk, goth, folk band called Eve’s Rib, and we rock. Hard. Check us out at patreon.com/evesrib!
