What was your first Shotgun Players experience?

My first Shotgun Players experience was last summer in 2016. I started my fellowship then. I worked a lot on costumes and sewing and then I got a chance to work with Trish on casting, and worked on The Events auditions with Susannah towards the end of the summer so that was a really awesome experience.

Why Shotgun Players?

I’ve always loved Shotgun’s values and their vision. I really appreciate the strong dedication to the community and the people who come to see the shows here. I really resonate with those and they make me really excited. I love working at a theater or an institution that really values the opinions and visions of every single person who is involved.

What made you want to be a MAD fellow?

I was really excited to be a MAD fellow after I had done an artistic directing project as my senior capstone when I graduated college. Patrick and I met up and really talked about the opportunities I would get if I had been a MAD fellow with him. So, I was really excited about to get the opportunity to shadow and be really heavily involved in a non-profit theater as the artistic fellow. So, that got me really excited.

What is your favorite Shotgun play and why?

My favorite Shotgun play was Hamlet because I came with some of my friends from college and it was just such an awesome, refreshing take on a classic play. I think it’s so exciting to see a rejuvenated version of Shakespeare in this modern day when it’s kind of either overdone or underdone and a lot of our generation gets excited about Shakespeare again. So I really liked it.

What knowledge to you hope to gain from your fellowship?

I hope to come away with a lot of knowledge on how to represent a community, the values and ethics that Shotgun upholds and that I personally uphold. So, that I can go out into the world and produce and be a part of art that is really reflective of the needs and the wants of the people who surround and who come to see that art.

What is the one play you would love Shotgun to produce?

I would love, love love love if Shotgun would produce Sarah Ruhl’s The Melancholy Play. I don’t have a reason really but I just really love that play. I guess I have a reason but it’s exciting to me and a lot of people don’t know that play from her old works as far as I know. I personally love that play, so I would really like to see what Shotgun could do with it.

Why theater?

Theater for me is the place where we come back to when we want to get excited about the human condition. Also, I think it’s one of the most powerful vehicles for activism and I think it’s one of the most inclusive and diverse communities that I’ve ever been a part of and it’s a safe space. So, I really love theater for all of the above.

Can you share one fun fact about yourself?

One fun fact about me is I was once stung by a jellyfish and have a really cool speckled scar on my ankle from it.
