M.A.D Artistic Direction Fellowship

The artistic direction fellow is a 9–12-month program. The purpose of this experience is to give the fellow a comprehensive look at the work and responsibilities of an artistic director for a mid-sized, regional theatre company. The fellow will work an average of 25 hours per week, during office hours 10am–5pm, with some evening or weekend commitments. A weekly schedule will be worked out with Shotgun's artistic director.

Responsibilities

  • Get familiar with the plays for Shotgun's main stage and reading series program in order to participate in discussions on production, design, and thematic elements
  • Attend design run-throughs of main stage and reading series productions and email feedback to the artistic director
  • Attend and participate in main stage and reading series production meetings
  • Coordinate and host post-show discussions with audience members and artists
  • Coordinate and oversee general and show-specific auditions with artistic and casting director
  • Read scripts under consideration for the coming season and discuss with artistic director and creative teams
  • Attend other performances in the Bay Area and discuss the impact of the piece using aesthetics, organizational mission, social relevance, and overall vision
  • Participate and support arts advocacy initiatives taken on by the artistic director and organization
  • Attend local conferences, round tables, and gatherings related to theatre arts
  • Assist artistic director and staff with day-to-day projects of the theater and organization

Prerequisites

  • Some experience in direction for at least one production (either academic or non-academic)
  • Proficiency with Google Suite (Sheets and Docs in particular)
  • Enthusiasm for the intersections between community engagement, social activism, and art-making
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work independently

Time Commitment

25 hours/week

Compensation

Shotgun offers $150/week stipend to offset travel expenses.
