Bethany

Written by Laura Marks

Directed by Tracy Ward

August 3 & 4, 2015, doors at 6pm; performance at 7pm

Description

Crystal is a woman trying to hold it all together. She's smart and hard-working, but a series of bad circumstances have run her life right off track. Inspired by the dark stories which came from our country's downward financial spiral, Laura Marks created a tense emotional drama about a young single mother scrambling to survive. Just how far would you go to protect your child?

FROM DIRECTOR TRACY WARD:

“Bethany intrigues me as an examination of the recent (and potentially repeating) economic past, cross-cut with the impact and toll the events of the crash in 2007-8 had on the human psyche. I love the way Laura Marks has folded the facets of damage into the different characters, revealing a common desperation that winds its way through their lives, and how this adds up to the shocking as well as inevitable conclusion.”
“Ms. Marks’s trenchant, economical drama is...rare among new American plays in the clear, compassionate attention it pays to the corrosive effects of the economic downturn...Self-reliance may be a celebrated American virtue, but Bethany reminds us that the distance between self-preservation and pure ruthlessness can be collapsed with alarming ease.”
