The Magnolia Ballet

The world is changing slowly but deeply

The Magnolia Ballet is a tale of four men: a son, a lover, an ancestor, and a father. They dance in the sticky heat of a rural, Southern Gothic landscape fraught with secrets and possibilities. With expansive poetry and whispered prose, this piece births resilience underneath the bloom of fresh magnolias.

THE MAGNOLIA BALLET – Content Advisories

Shotgun Players is equally committed to presenting challenging work and taking care of our patrons.

Content advisories are a tool to help our patrons choose how they want to engage with each play. While we have tried to cover the most common sensitivities, the list below is not exhaustive. Some listed advisories refer to lines only briefly mentioned in the plays, whereas others are major themes of the work. These advisories will be updated regularly as plays are developed in rehearsal and production.

The Magnolia Ballet confronts the enduring legacies of white supremacy, racial violence, and colonial trauma in America.

It includes references to slavery, the Middle Passage, lynchings (historic and modern), the Trail of Tears, and the assassinations of Black leaders. The show contains stylized depictions of violence, including the decapitation of a child, sexual acts, and gunshot-like sounds from an onstage video game. Language includes the use of the n-word and f-slur, and scenes engage themes of homophobia, corporal punishment, and Confederate iconography.

These elements are woven into a larger exploration of Black survival, queerness, and ancestral memory. Bodies attacked by these violences are miracles and we bare witness as rebellion against their attempted erasure. Please hold care for yourself as/if/when you engage these histories.

In The Magnolia Ballet, Confederate iconography is not used for shock or spectacle, but as a spectral residue—evidence of a past that refuses to remain past. These symbols surface not as static history, but as active agents in a nation’s cyclical ritual of forgetting and re-violating. By invoking them, we confront the brutal truth that the dismemberment of Black bodies has always been tied to the dismembering of memory itself: to erase what was, to control what will be. Onstage, these artifacts are not revered—they are distressed, distorted, and ultimately regurgitated by the swamp that creeps from stage left to stage right, a slow-moving reclamation. From this decay, buds of possibility emerge, fragile but insistent, rooting a future that remembers differently—one where survival is not silence, but bloom.

AUDIO-DESCRIBED PERFORMANCE
Sunday, JUly 27

audio-described performances

During these performances, blind and low vision patrons may use headset devices provided by Gravity Access to listen to a live audio description of the show. The narration guides the listener through the performance with concise, objective descriptions of new scenes, lighting, costumes, facial expressions / body language, and “sight gags,” all slipped in between portions of the actors’ dialogue or songs.

For sighted patrons, these performances are the same as any other evening.

HAPTIC TOURS

Pre-show haptic tours allow blind and low-vision patrons to experience the space, performers, costumes, and props through touch, their own movement, hearing, and kinesthetic senses. Usually lasting 20 to 30 minutes, these tours lay a multi-sensory foundation to support the audio description. Doors for pre-show Haptic Tours open at 12:45 PM for check-in. We recommend arriving early as tours begin promptly at 1 PM. The audio-described performances start at 2 PM.

MASKED-AUDIENCE PERFORMANCE
Sunday, August 3

masked-audience performances

We understand that there are many members of our community who prefer to gather in masked spaces. To make our performances accessible to as many people as possible, we offer select Sunday “Masked Audience” performances. Food and drink will still be available at our concessions and can be enjoyed outside, but there is no eating or drinking inside the theater during these performances as all audience members, ushers, and staff will be required to wear masks. Performers will be unmasked while on stage during the performance.

onstage seating

We invite you to sit onstage in the sweltering bosom of a Georgia summer. The only participation asked of patrons seated onstage is listening, watching, and holding the stories of these four men, as they may speak directly to you. Water and ghosts live here, and we welcome you to sit under the magnolias and witness.
