THE CHAMPAGNE STAGED READING SERIES

WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY CHRIS STEELE

Electra Becomes

April 20 & 21

Inspired by Sophocles’ & EuripIdes’ Electra

Electra is raging against a system that disenfranchises her gender, against a family that gaslights her pain, against gods that play loud favorites and seem to have forgotten her. In the wake of a world-changing war, in halls haunted by the ghosts of her murdered family members, she concocts a plan…to wait for someone else to act. Is revenge the same as justice?

WRITTEN BY TARA BLAU SMOLLEN

The Gull

June 22 & 23

Adapted from Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull

Set in 1938 Oak Bluffs, a historic Black vacation community on Martha’s Vineyard, The Gull is a multiracial adaptation of Chekhov’s The Seagull that explores the sacrifices Black artists must make in the pursuit of success. Anna Cardin, a successful Black Hollywood radio star, returns home after losing a coveted film role. She hopes to persuade her son Connie to give up his artistic dreams on the Vineyard for a future in Hollywood — but Connie is torn between his own ambitions and his love for a young island girl who longs for stardom.

WRITTEN BY TERRY GUEST

House of Jules

August 24 & 25

Adapted from August Strindberg’s Miss Julie

Conceived and Directed by AeJay Antonis Marquis

House of Jules places Strindberg’s Miss Julie in a Black New Orleans bounce and hip hop club owned by a wealthy Creole patriarch. House of Jules stages madness, longing, escape, and capital enslavement inside the sweat and ritual of Black club culture. It asks: when the beat drops, can desire set us free—or does the house always win?

offstage OFFERINGS

In the spirit of meeting the moment, Shotgun Players will continue Thursday and Sunday Post-Show Conversations, giving audiences space to break down the themes of each production. Every night offers a chance to connect with neighbors, friends, and fellow theatre lovers. This is a time for bold art and adventurous spirits to confront the madness around us, and we need one another to share ideas, laugh together, and rediscover the power of theater to build community.

Offstage, Let’s Break It Down will keep offering fresh ways to engage with each Mainstage show. Back for its second season, Miriam’s Place seminars and spotlights explore the creative process behind our plays, with behind-the-curtain insights with industry professionals.

LET’S BREAK IT DOWN

HOSTED BY PATRICK DOOLEY WITH SPECIAL GUESTS

From moderated discussions to curated experiences, our Let’s Break It Down events are designed to offer a deeper dive into the subject matter of each Mainstage show.

A SEMINAR SERIES

Get an insider’s perspective on what goes into creating a play from the first read of a script, through design discussions, into the rehearsal rooms, and finally to full production. Shotgun Players’ artistic director Patrick Dooley and other collaborating artists will lead this exploration through the experience of producing Edward Albee’s classic The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? This seminar involves six gatherings on Mondays from 10:30am – 12pm, and four other events, including a read-through with the cast, a rehearsal in our studios, a technical rehearsal, and a preview performance at the theater.

**Limit 20 participants per seminar
