Miss Thang! places Strindberg’s Miss Julie in a New Orleans mansion owned by a wealthy Creole patriarch. This Shotgun Players-commissioned work by The Magnolia Ballet playwright, Terry Guest, stages madness, longing, escape, and capital enslavement inside the sweat and ritual of Black club culture. It asks: when the beat drops, can desire set us free—or does the house always win?

[formally titled The House of Jules]

❋ Run-time: Approximately 90 minutes with no intermission

MISS THANG – Content Advisories

Shotgun Players is equally committed to presenting challenging work and taking care of our patrons.

Content advisories are a tool to help our patrons choose how they want to engage with each play. While we have tried to cover the most common sensitivities, the list below is not exhaustive. Some listed advisories refer to lines only briefly mentioned in the plays, whereas others are major themes of the work. These advisories will be updated regularly as plays are developed in rehearsal and production.

If you have any questions, we encourage you to call or email the box office, and we’re happy to provide more context. (510.841.6500, ext. 303 or [email protected])

CONTENT ADVISORIES

This developmental staged reading of Miss Thang! contains strong language, including community reclamations of the n-word (stated with an a ending by Black characters) and f-word slur (as a term of endearment stated by a Queer character); explicit sexual content and simulated sexual activity; alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and pill use; suicide and suicidal ideation; simulated physical violence; simulated animal death; and references to Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. The production also explores grief, class inequality, workplace and sexual power dynamics, infidelity, and queer shame.
